ATMOSPHERE- Pizzeria Biga is located in the old Woodward rail car power station. It’s an old brick building that is over 100 years old. Very high ceilings and an open room is the first thing you are greeted with. You have the option to sit at the bar, dine indoors, dine indoors up in the loft area, dine outdoors on the patio, or have drinks out on the terrace.
The music is the best too. They play great classic rock from Jimi, to Zeppelin, to Janis Joplin. Just fantastic to sit back and listen to some good music while enjoying some food, drink, and company.
The major drawback is the train. Several times a day, the train will pass directly next to the Restaurant. It blares the horn and loudly passes for a minute or so. You basically need to stop your conversation and wait for the train to pass. And if you’re sitting out on the patio or terrace, prepare to have your pants soiled.
However, I am able to get past the loud train for the following reasons…
QUALITY- Let’s start with the food. Rustic Italian is the best way to describe it. They have a wonderful selection of brick oven pizzas. They use a style called Nepoletana which bakes your pizza at 900*. You’re not going to want to build your own pizza here, the chef has already discovered the best combinations. I love the Duck Procuitto pizza. You can also get a pasta dish. The pasta dishes are good, but not as good as the pizza.
My favorite thing to do is order a cheese and meat sampler to go with my beer. The bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and will be more than happy to make a cheese and meat recommendation based on the beer you are drinking. They usually have a large selection of house made meats or hard salami and aged cheeses.
The beer selection is also quite good. They usually have around 20 beers on tap and no taps are wasted on BMC!! They also cellar their kegs and have cellared 750 upon request. They will put these beers on the menu when they decide they are ready. They recently put aged 75min IPA on the menu and it was fantastic! They don’t cellar them for it to be rarer, and therefore able to charge more. They cellar to bring you the best experience with your beer. They also understand the importance of appropriate glassware.
Whisky/Bourbon drinkers, you’ll be in heaven. Can you say “bourbon flight”?
SERVICE- This is why I come here. They only hire friendly people! The staff is extremely knowledgeable in both beer and food. You can usually trust their recommendations. Now that they know me, and I trust them, I just show up at the bar and they bring me a beer I’ll probably like, and the meat and cheese to compliment it. A++ service. They are laid back and low-pressure. I love ‘em!
SELECTION- Like I said before, they have an impressive beer selection. No BMC on tap! It’s not uncommon to find a few Dogfish offerings (90min, 120min, etc.), Chimay, Goose Island, Shorts, Founders, and interesting limited runs on tap. They know how much craft they sell and they buy appropriate sized kegs so IPAs are always fresh.
FOOD- Explained in the QUALITY section. Great food. The pizzas are world class. The meats and cheeses are expertly selected.
V- Average $11/pizza. Typical tap pricing and bottle markup. A great place to take your SO and another couple and do a double date. Split a pizza and a pasta dish. It’s really reasonable and a place you could visit regularly. Beware, you’re going to want to tip a lot!
